Download for a 1600x1200 version

My latest take on the classic Reflective Sphere on a Checkered Plane image. Created for an art contest subject "before + after", this being "after" I got my mad povray skillz!

The whole scene is constructed in pure POVray code (i.e. procedural textures and objects), apart from 1 photo texture for the HDRI.

It uses just about every photo-real trick I know: focal blur, vignetting, dispersion (RGB seperation at the edges of the image). The only other trick I know of is rendering in CIE colour space, but that's a lot of hassle with HDR.

It's an HDRI probe. i.e. it's a 360 degree photo of a real place with extra brightness info that makes it more realistic than a conventional photo.

ooo intreguing... is that the sort of thing that needs specialist hardware or is it software based?

It depends on what 3D software you're using. With the renderer I use (povray) there's an unofficial version (megapov) that includes support for HDR images. Most renderers these days will have some kind of plug-in support for HDR.

The techniques for taking HDR photos are quite complex and I've never tried it myself. I'm using an image from the photo->HDR page on this website: [link] and there's some other ones with more technical info here: [link]
